South African wins top book prize.

She won the prize for her story Poison which was printed in the anthology Africa Pens, and takes a £10000 prize. The other 4 writers on the shortlist were from Ghana, Malawi, and Nigeria and S. A. The prize, given for a short story, can be awarded to African writers who have revealed fiction inside Africa or elsewhere worldwide. The prize is named after Sir Michael Caine, a previous boss of Booker plc. Last year's Caine Prize was won by Ugandan writer Monica Arac de Nyeko for the Jambula Tree, a tale about lesbianism. 2 stories Henrietta Rose-Innes is comparatively experienced compared to fresh winners. She's got already had 2 stories broadcast in addition to revising an anthology of South African writing. Her books Shark's Egg and The Rocket Alphabet have been well received - she studied creative writing under the Nobel laureate JM Coetzee. Winning the prize guarantees more interest from publishers and reviewers in addition to including a month's grant at Georgetown varsity in Washington DC. |
