Local writer talks about her novel.

When Patricia Cumbie would have liked to set her 1st novel in a working-class neighborhood, she knew precisely where it should be. "To me, Rubberville and Racine, it's the maximum amount of a personality in the book as anyone"Cumbie expounded. "I grew up in a working-class family, and I believe Rubberville is the archetypal working-class neighborhood.". Cumbie, 44, announced she needed to write about a sophisticated friendship, and what would occur if somebody did something about an act of sexual violence. She was driven to scribble the book due to her very own experience as a sexual attack survivor, she claimed. Cumbie was eighteen years of age when the attack occurred - she had left a party, unaware she was being followed. "I was so riven with shame"Cumbie asserted. "It truly caused a deep well of self-doubt, in addition to a large amount of anger.". It took her about 5 years to scribble the book, and another 2 years ( and 55 refusals ) to uncover a publisher. The book didn't start out as a youthful adult novel. She revealed changing the target assembly for the novel didn't change her point of view on the tale. Instead, it made her excited that her work might be useful to youthful girls, she announced. Whilst doing research for the book, Cumbie revealed that youthful girls are at the biggest hazard for experiencing sexual violence. "It is definitely feasible to recover and go on to steer a purposeful and fulfilling life.". Cumbie's family moved to Racine, her mother's hometown, from California when she was three years of age. They lived in Rubberville till she was eight, and then moved round the county. Cumbie graduated from Park highschool, 1901 12th St, in 1981. It was in high school that Cumbie 1st became interested in writing, working on poetry and stories. After graduating from the varsity of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in British and history, Cumbie moved to Minnesota in 1989. She then started to chase writing seriously, taking classes and publishing short stories. "I felt sort of concerned about putting a book out about this subject and what people's reactions would be"Cumbie expounded. Stories could be a strong way to modify people's points of view, Cumbie claimed, and her book wants to do just that. "as a culture, we've the power to do a load more to see the indications of sexual violence in our society"Cumbie announced. "I am hoping the novel gives folk tools to do that more readily, opens the doorway to debate about how that might change in our own lives.". |
